INTEGRATED CHILD DEVELOPMENT SERVICES SCHEME

Integrated Child Development Services Scheme, is one of the pioneer schemes implemented for the welfare of children and mothers. ICDS aims at achieving the Holistic Development of the child and to improve the Nutrition and Health status of the vulnerable group of children under 5 years, Pregnant and Lactating Mothers. The focus is to reduce Malnutrition, Morbidity, Mortality and school dropout of children in convergence with other related departments. Integrated Child Development Services Scheme was launched on 2nd October 1975 in Chennai, Nilakottai and Thally as Pilot Projects and later expanded to all states of Tamil Nadu.

In Rural and Urban areas for every 400 to 800 Population and in Tribal area for every 300 to 800 population  there is one Main anganwadi centre and between 150 to 300 population there is one Mini Anganwadi Centre as per Government of India norms.

Integrated Child Development Services at Kanchipuram has 6 Child Development Project Offices At present 844 Main Anganwadi Centres and 96 Mini Anganwadi Centres  and totally 940 Anganwadi Centres are functioning.

Aim:

  • Improving the Health and Nutritional status of children from 0 months to 60 months.
  • Preventing the Nutritional deficiency in children below 3 years.
  • Achieving Holistic Development children in through pre – school education.
  • Preventing Infant and Maternal Mortality.
  • Improving the Nutritional status of Women and Adolescent Girls through Nutritional and Health education.

Beneficiaries:

  • Children from 6 months to 60 months.
  • Antenatal and Postnatal women.
  • Adolescent Girls (11 – 18 years).

POSHAN ABHIYAAN (National Nutrition Mission)

Government of India has setup National Nutrition Mission with a goal to achieve improvement in Nutritional status of children from birth to 6 years, Pregnant Women and Lactating Mothers in a time bound manner during the next three years, commencing from  2017-2018.The POSHAN Abhiyaan scheme is being implemented with the funding pattern of  80 : 20.

In Tamilnadu this scheme was implemented in phased manner as detailed below :

The Goals of POSHAN Abhiyaan are detailed below:

Human Resources – POSHAN Abhiyaan

            To implement POSHAN Abhiyaan and to achieve the goals, State Project Management Unit (SPMU) has been constituted which will also act as State Nutrition Resource Centre, in order to provide a synergized setup for implementation of schemes to overcome malnourishment. Help Desk at District and Block level will support SPMU achieve the goals of POSHAN Abhiyaan.
