A PERSPECTIVE OF DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES

  

                    The share of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Kancheepuram in improving the social and economic status of the farmers is always noteworthy.

 

  • In this district are provided with artificial insemination technology where exotic bull semen that is processed is used to ensure maximum production to benefit the farmers.
  • The knowledge of A2 milk and involvement in the conservation of indigenous breeds has spiked the production of semen of these breeds for distribution to the farmers.
  • Frozen semen at Rs.10/- is been supplied at an economical price to the farmers and this is effective to produce cross breed heifer calves which improves  the economic status of the farmer.
  • To sustain the high production of milk from the cows, the animals had to be fed with ad libedum green fodder. The farmers with agricultural land are supplied with slips of fodder by this department. Moreover certified seeds are also supplied to them.
  • The fodder such grown should also he effectively and scientifically used at the farmers’ end. So, chaff cutters are supplied by this department at a subsidized rate.
  • Minerals play a vital role in the maintenance of animal health and production. So this department also supplies mineral mixture to the farmers.

                 All the veterinary institutions are supplied with vaccines so as to achieve minimum mortality in this district. Medical and surgical cases are also performed in the institution.

SCHEME ACTIVITIES

 1 State fodder Development Scheme(SFDS) When milch animals are being raised, green fodder will be a liability. To fortify the production fodder slips, leguminous and fodder seeds are supplied to be sown as rainfed crops
Sprinklers at 75% subsidized are also provided to farmers
Chaf cutters are also provided which warrants the effective utilisation of green fodder resulting in reduced wastage and available to the farmers with 75% subsidy
Supplying green fodder throughout the year is a Herculean task per the farmers but production of azolla in their backyard is possibly the best alternative of green fodder and also is fortified with essential nutrients
Urbanization had left little land for agriculture. But hydroponics provides greens to the farmers where no land is required to raise fodder. Farmers are trained and supplied with components free of cost.
Farmers / cattle owners who owned irrigated land and interested to cultivate high yielding fodder crops.
 2 NADP Poultry Scheme For poultry development RAFTAAR / National Agriculture Development Programme – project proposal “Entrepreneurship development through Native chicken rearing” scheme implemented for the year 2020-21
5 Beneficiaries for each block has to be selected under 50% back ended subsidy
Farmers who have experience  or interest in poultry rearing and have capacity to own a 1000 birds poultry house (shelter).
Beneficiary should be a permanent resident of that village.
Beneficiary already have night shelter of atleast 2500 sq.ft.
Beneficiary to ensure to sustain the farm not less than 3 years.
 3 Foot and Mouth Disease Control Programme (FMDCP) To protect the livestock against FMD, 4.23 lakh livestock are being vaccinated against FMD at the farmer’s doorsteps in a gap of every 6 months. Farmers having animals.
4 Livestock Insurance Scheme(LIS) The unprecedented death of animals is a economical loss to the farmer. To overcome such losses, milch animals are insured by this department wherein only 25% of the premium is paid by the beneficiary whereas 75%. Farmers can insure who have owned cattles under the age  2 1/2 years to 8 years.

A beneficiary  have eligible to insure 5 large animals only
5 Kalnadai Padhukappu Thittam(KPT) In this scheme, far off villages that don’t have easy access to veterinary institutions have been selected. Camps will be conducted in these villages. Routines of the activities performed in the veterinary institutions are performed in this village.
In total, 282 such camps are being conducted year wise. Deworming, setting of repeat breeders, insemination, treatment of sick animals vaccination and minor surgeries are being performed. In a nut shell, one day veterinary institutions at village level.

6 Assistance to States for Control of Animal Disease (ASCAD) This scheme enables identifying endemic areas of diseases and as a result animals are vaccinated in advance. This prevents any untoward incidents, Anthrax, Pasteurella, Black quarter, Foot and mouth and PPR disease are covered Farmers having animals.
7 Animal Mobile Medical Ambulance(AMMA) To provide emergency veterinary services at the farmer’s door step, 1 AMMA vehicle is functioning in the district with Thiruvallur as head quarters. To avail the above services a toll free no.”1962” is under use
